Intro to Wild Swimming

Two hours of wild swimming, sea knowledge, sauna and cake on the Dorset coast.

Fancy getting into wild swimming but not quite sure where to start? Or perhaps you’re already comfortable in the water but want to feel more confident understanding the conditions, choosing your kit and dealing with cold water?

Our Intro to Wild Swimming sessions are designed for exactly that.

Based in Swanage, Dorset, we’ll spend time on some of the area’s beautiful Blue Flag, sandy beach, learning the essentials of safe, enjoyable wild swimming in a relaxed and friendly environment. Our location may change depending on the weather and sea conditions, because understanding those conditions is part of wild swimming too.

Over the session, we’ll cover:

  • Your kit — what you actually need, how to use it and what might make your swim more comfortable.

  • Cold water — how your body responds, how to acclimatise and how to recognise when it’s time to get out.

  • Weather and sea conditions — learning what to look for before you swim and how conditions can change.

  • Swimming skills — simple techniques to help you feel more comfortable and confident in open water.

  • Wild swimming know-how — practical tips and knowledge you can take away and use on your own swims.

But this isn't a classroom session on a beach.

There’s plenty of time to simply enjoy being in the water, meet some like-minded people and spend a couple of hours in one of Dorset’s most beautiful coastal settings.

And then comes the important bit...

Swim. Sauna. Cake.

After around an hour in and around the water, we’ll head into the sauna for a 30-minute warm-up, before finishing with some homemade cake from the Wild Swimming Co's famous kitchen.

It’s a lovely way to spend a couple of hours,  learning something new, getting in the sea, warming up properly and meeting other people who love being outdoors and in the water.

Suitable for confident swimmers and people who are already comfortable around water but want to learn more about wild swimming.

Is there a wetsuit policy?

We’ll always recommend a wetsuit, they will keep you warmer for longer and you’ll be more buoyant. We’ll be swimming in some iconic locations, wearing a wetsuit may mean that you can enjoy the swim for a little longer than you are used to. However we understand that it’s not for everyone, therefore wetsuits are always optional. Also, don't wear a wetsuit in a sauna!

Is there a tow float policy?

When we swim on a journey, we do require all swimmers to wear tow floats. This helps us manage the group and be super visible which in turn improves safety.

How do you manage safety?

All of our Guides are beach lifeguards and first aiders, all of our swim locations are carefully reccied, risk assessed and led by guides who are experienced in that location.

Are there any ability requirements?

Our experiences are ideally suited for complete beginners who want to try wild swimming, they are also carefully planned so as improvers and intermediate swimmers are challenged. So, come along for a float around, or complete along and swim up to 2km per day. We’ll have at least one swim coach on each of our trips.

What do I need to bring?

You don’t need to spend hundreds on specialist kit to come on an adventure with us, but you can find the essentials listed on your chosen day experience. We can talk through all the posh bits and pieces on the market when you’re with us.

What a lovely weekend! I felt very looked after from start to finish. Rich, Mel, Nicole and McCartney are all so welcoming. Great company, food, accommodation and what an experience visiting the sauna and lake at Corfe Castle! Saturday was perfect in every way, from the sunrise and croissants on the beach, to the saunas, walk and ending the afternoon in a cosy pub. Enjoyed every minute of the weekend. Thank you!

Mel and Richard truly pulled out all the stops to make it bespoke, comfortable, and as special as possible. A real highlight was the nighttime sauna and sea dip at Lulworth Cove. I’d highly recommend it.

I had the most incredible weekend in Snowdonia — a truly magical experience from start to finish. The wild swimming in the lakes and waterfalls was absolutely exhilarating, and every dip felt like a little adventure of its own. The scenery was breathtaking, and the whole trip had such an energising, feel-good vibe. The accommodation was wonderful — warm, welcoming, and so cosy after a day outdoors. The beds were super comfy, and the whole place had that relaxed, homely atmosphere that makes you instantly feel at ease. The home-cooked food was delicious (and plentiful!), and every meal felt like it had been made with real care. What really made the weekend special, though, were the people. I met such amazing, like-minded souls — everyone was friendly, supportive, and up for a laugh. It was one of those trips that leaves you feeling refreshed, inspired, and grateful. I honestly couldn’t recommend it more — perfect for anyone looking to connect with nature, meet great people, and make unforgettable memories.
