Lake District

Men in the Mountain

Escape to the mountains at Almond Lodge—perched 1000ft up on Helvellyn, with natural plunge pools right outside the door. This is raw, exposed, and built for proper wild swimming.

Overlooking Ullswater in the heart of the Lakes, this is your base for a full reset: cold water immersion, mountain hikes, and hard-earned recovery by the fire.

You’ll push into icy water, learn how to control your breathing under pressure, and build real resilience—physically and mentally. No fluff, just the essentials done well.

Expect:

  • Cold plunges in natural mountain pools

  • Guided hikes in serious terrain

  • Sauna/fire recovery and proper downtime

  • Solid food to refuel after long days outside

This is for men who want more than a break—something that actually challenges you and leaves you sharper.

Book your spot and earn your reset in the Lake District.

ITINERARY (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Day 1: Welcome to the Lakes

1pm: Meet at our first location.

Your adventure begins beneath the majestic slopes of Helvellyn, England’s favourite mountain. We’ll kick things off with a guided dip in a breathtaking lake, followed by an optional swim clinic led by our expert coaches—perfect for building confidence or refining your stroke in a truly spectacular setting.

After your swim, warm up with homemade cake and a flask of something hot—the perfect post-dip reward. There’s plenty of time to relax and connect with your fellow swimmers before we head to Almond Lodge to settle into your rooms.

Evening: Gather in the cosy dining room for a hearty homemade dinner with table wine, followed by our much-loved ‘Tame the Tides’ talk in the lounge. Led by Royal Lifesaving Society trainer Rich, this informal and inspiring session will help you feel more confident navigating the ever-changing wild waters.

Day 2: Sunrise & waterfalls

Early Morning Sunrise Dip - For the early risers, we begin the day with a magical sunrise swim at one of the Lake District’s most serene spots. Feel the stillness of the morning, the steam rising off the water, and the golden glow of dawn—all before your first croissant.

Breakfast & Waterfall Adventure - Back at the lodge, refuel with a wholesome breakfast before we set off on a short drive to one of the region’s most spectacular waterfalls. It’s a sight to behold—cameras at the ready! We’ll take time to explore, soak in the scenery, and maybe even dip a toe (or more) in if conditions allow.

Afternoon: Optional Hike & Sunset Swim - In the afternoon, opt in for a scenic hike around Helvellyn, where every turn reveals another breathtaking view. We’ll wind down the day with a sunset dip in crystal-clear waters—an unforgettable moment to reflect, reconnect, and revel in the beauty of wild swimming in the Lakes.

Day 3: Lakeside Farewell

Morning: Breakfast & Ullswater Swim- Ease into your final day with a stack of homemade pancakes, then head out for a short drive to the breathtaking shores of Ullswater—a glacial lake tucked beneath the peaks of Helvellyn. For those feeling adventurous, join a point-to-point guided swim and take in the majesty of this iconic location from the water.

A Sweet Send-Off - Back on dry land, we’ll gather one last time to share our signature lemon drizzle cake—because no Wild Swimming Co. retreat is complete without cake!

Farewell: 1:00 PM - With hearts full and bodies refreshed, we’ll say our goodbyes at 1:00 PM, taking home unforgettable memories, new friendships, and the spirit of the Lakes.

RETREAT FAQ

Is there a wetsuit policy?

We’ll always recommend a wetsuit, they will keep you warmer for longer and you’ll be more buoyant. We’ll be swimming in some iconic locations, wearing a wetsuit may mean that you can enjoy the swim for a little longer than you are used to. However we understand that it’s not for everyone, therefore wetsuits are always optional.

Is there a tow float policy?

When we swim on a journey, we do require all swimmers to wear tow floats. However they are also compulsory for dips in depth. This helps us manage the group and be super visible which in turn improves safety.

How do you manage safety?

All of our Guides are beach lifeguards and first aiders, all of our swim locations are carefully reccied, risk assessed and led by guides who are experienced in that location.

Are there any ability requirements?

Our swim retreats are ideally suited for complete beginners who want to try wild swimming, they are also carefully planned so as improvers and intermediate swimmers are challenged. So, come along for a float around, or complete along and swim up to 2km per day. We’ll have at least one swim coach on each of our trips.

What do I need to bring?

You don’t need to spend hundreds on specialist kit to come on a Wild Swimming Retreat, but you will need a tow float (which you can buy when you’re here!), a towel or robe and footwear that you can wear in the water. We can talk through all the posh bits and pieces on the market when you’re with us.

Do you track distances, times and temperatures?

We try not to get too hung up on times, distances and temperatures. We are just having a wonderful time in iconic places with great people. However if improving is your plan, we can help you swim up to 2km per day. We’ll also have a swim coach on every trip.
